Earlier this month in Fresno, a 31-year old woman was killed in a vehicle rollover crash that ejected her from her vehicle on Highway 41. According to the California Highway Patrol, the accident occurred at 7:30 a.m. on October 4th, near North Avenue on Highway 41 heading northbound. The woman was driving at high speeds, drifted into the median, and lost control of the car. Reports suggest that the vehicle rolled several times, and ejected the woman from the driver’s seat, over a fence and into the truck yard at Midnight Express. No other cars were involved in the accident, and authorities have not yet released the name of the driver of the vehicle.
Are Rollover Accidents Common?
Rollover accidents like this one happen frequently in the State of California. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, more than 280,000 vehicle rollover accidents happen annually. SUV’s are notorious for rolling over, simply because their design makes them top heavy. Rollover accidents are significantly more dangerous than car accidents where the vehicle doesn’t roll, and result in a higher rate of fatalities. Some vehicles are built to reduce the chances of a rollover occurring. However, a rollover accident can occur with any vehicle at any time if the conditions are right.
What Happens in a Rollover Accident?
In 3 out of 4 vehicle rollovers, the driver or other passengers are ejected from the vehicle while the vehicle is rolling, as in the case of the Fresno accident on October 4th. This increases the risk of fatality, from either being ejected a great distance at a high speed, or being crushed by the vehicle as it continues to rolls. Individuals that remain in the vehicle during the accident may also be crushed by a caved in roof, or experience life threatening or fatal injuries by penetrating objects in the crash. Vehicle rollovers claim 10,000 lives each year or more, and injure many others.
